The caduecus was carried by Mercury, the Roman god of trade. Mercury wore a winged petasos - a type of hat. The cadecus/petasos attributes are also associated with Mercury's Greek counterpart, Hermes the god of boundaries and travelers and also messanger/translator between gods and men.
